Implantology is a very intricate specialty, even more so when having to deal with additional factors and less than perfect conditions.
One of the most important factors in the success of an implant is the quantity and quality of the bone to which the implant is to be attached. When there’s not enough tissue it can be difficult, if not impossible, to perform such a delicate procedure.
But science is an amazing thing and, with the possibility to renew bone with biomaterials, it’s possible to create perfect conditions on the upper jaw to implant when there is not enough bone.
This is a simple surgery, where the biomaterial and the implants are inserted at the same time. The maxillary sinus is cut laterally and, after the pegs are implanted, it is filled with the biomaterial that will promote bone renewal.
As a dentist and an implantologist, I can say that this is a technique that deserves a great deal of credit! It provides us, professionals, with a fairly simple option to solve an otherwise serious problem, and it gives the patients a winning chance in a situation that can seem nearly impossible to solve at first sight.
Having a fully functioning mouth and a nice smile is not a luxury. Everybody has a right to feel good with themselves and to feel comfortable in the body they live in, and this is one of the ways that we, dentists, can help people in achieving this.
